Questions you should ask your doctor after you’ve been injured

Picture1What questions should you ask your doctor after you’ve been injured in a car accident?

When you are involved in a car accident, it is always in your best interest to seek immediate medical attention. In some cases, you may not be aware that you are injured until weeks or even months after the accident. Delaying medical treatment can seriously jeopardize your recovery as well as potentially hurting your accident injury claim.

Based on our experience as car accident attorneys, below are several questions we believe you should ask your doctor before being treated for injuries sustained in a car accident. The more ‘homework’ you do, the better equipped you will be to choose an experienced accident injury lawyer.

When You Go to the Doctor after a Car Accident, Ask the Doctor . . . .

When can I go back to work?
It is extremely important that you do not return to work before your doctor releases you to perform the type of work required to do your job. You do not want to aggravate your injury or cause greater harm to your health. Your medical provider will advise you when it is safe for you to return to work. Returning to work against your medical provider’s advice could harm your car accident case.

Do I need prolonged physical therapy?
The answer to this question will depend on the type and severity of your injury. For example, a person may break his leg in a car accident and only require just a few weeks of physical therapy. On the other hand, a passenger who has broken his hip will likely require much more physical therapy to reach full recovery. Again, follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to protect your right to receive all necessary compensation from the at-fault driver.

Will I fully recover?
Your doctor will give you his or her prognosis regarding your recovery. A prognosis is the doctor’s medical opinion based on his knowledge base and experience, the type and location of your injury, the severity of your injury, your age, your health, and other factors. It is important that you are always informed and updated regarding your prognosis in case you need to make decisions based on your current prognosis or a change in your prognosis.

What treatment plan do you recommend?
This is another important question to ask your doctor after you are injured in a car accident. You may need a pain management plan, physical therapy, personal care, occupational therapy, surgery, or diagnostic testing. Your doctor will help you determine the treatment plan that gives you the best chance of reaching maximum medical recovery.

Do you have working relationships with other medical providers?
Your injuries from the car accident may require a team of medical professionals to treat you properly. One doctor may treat your broken leg while another doctor treats the injury to your kidneys and yet another doctor may provide physical therapy. You want a primary doctor who has a strong network of professionals so he or she can recommend medical providers as needed in addition to managing your overall care and treatment.

Do I have any limitations in what tasks I can perform?
This is another important question to ask your doctor after being injured in a car accident. While you may feel well enough for a specific task, it may have the potential to aggravate your injury. It is always best to ask your doctor to provide detailed parameters regarding activities that are permitted and not permitted.

When should I hire a personal injury lawyer?
This is the only non-medical question we have included here. The main reason you want to hire a car accident attorney is for his or her knowledge and skill. It is best to speak with an experienced accident attorney as soon as possible.  The attorney will begin protecting your interests immediately.  An experienced attorney can answer all of the many questions that arise after an accident.  If you hire an attorney who has very little experience conducting a car crash investigation and handling a car accident claim, you may not receive the same amount of compensation an experienced attorney may have been able to negotiate for you.

The car accident attorneys of McMenamin & McMenamin, PS have the knowledge, experience, and skill you need to help you as you work to recover from your injuries.
